Water prices 'are being hidden'

18 April 2008

The real price of water is being covered up by regulators, the Socialist Party has claimed this week.

While Ofwat has stated that fees would be increased by 5.8%, the party suggested that actual rises have indeed been higher.

And some water companies have brought in other rises, it contended, such as Thames Water, yet unmetered consumers are apparently paying above these advertised figures.

The Socialist Party argued that Ofwat's figures may have been based on people who were going to alter their services and use a meter.

"Regulation for Ofwat seems another word for hiding the truth about their charges' anti-social activities," it said.

It then called for water firms to be nationalised rather than privatised as this could make the process more democratic and see that prices are fairer for individuals.

This week, in other water news, a burst main in Weymouth caused a great deal of disruption for drivers there.

If you don't have a water meter installed, you could be paying over the odds for your bills. uSwitch.com can help you work out your usage and see if installing a water meter could help you save money. Read our water saving tips too.
