Improved water management techniques ought to be used by firms in developed countries in a bid to improve efficiency, experts have stated this week.
Author Fred Pearce told the Water, Finance and Sustainability 2008 conference that the world faces a possible "crisis" as water is running out, reports Environmental Data Interactive.
Mr Pearce noted that while desalination is a key to way to improve supplies, it can be an "expensive" method.
Such views were matched by the Chief Executive of Veolia Water Antoine Ferot, who argued that demand from large areas has to be lessened.
He suggested: "The price of water today does not reflect its scarcity. The concept of free water generates huge waste."
And service providers have to divulge clear prices to consumers in order to aid the situation, he added.
John Reynolds from Reynolds Partners this week said that the prevailing credit crunch may well have an impact upon utilities firms, such as Thames Water.
