Changes planned by Thames Water

9 May 2008

Thames Water has said that it will attempt to lower leakages from its old network and allow consumers to be placed onto meters.

And the company stated that it hopes 80% of homes in the south-east to be on these water meters by 2020, a move that may cost £275 million, reports Reuters.

Use of water can be limited by these devices, it asserted, by between ten and 15%, while 24% of its customers are benefiting from them at present.

David Owens, Chief Executive at the company, argued that if support is given to Thames Water for the developments then finances could be opened up for future projects.

"We believe it is by far the fairest way to charge for water," he commented.

He added that the organisation will attempt to lower leakage in the years ahead, by 24% up until 2020.

With 13 million customers, Thames Water says that it is the biggest such provider in the UK.
