Water boss 'given leaving gift'

3 June 2008

The woman who used to run Northern Ireland Water has been given a payout of £266,000, it has been revealed.

In May, former Chief Executive of the firm Katherine Bryan stepped down after an error opened up the possibility of higher water bills for consumers, reports the BBC.

And now it is believed that regional development minister Conor Murphy has been informed of the severance pay deal following a question from another assembly member.

The Regional Development Committee has begun an inquiry into the episode, which resulted from a business plan adjustment.

Northern Ireland Water has been lambasted for the way in which it has handled the situation even though the outfit has claimed it is doing all it can to lower bills.

Ms Bryan had been responsible for everyday business at the firm.

The role of Chief Executive has been taken on by Chairman of the company Chris Mellor for the time being.
