NI Water criticised over maintenance work

16 October 2008

Northern Ireland Water has been criticised over the length of time it takes to clear up after carrying out infrastructure maintenance. The water company was named by the Northern Ireland Audit Office as having the worst track record for reinstating roads after they have been dug up. Water firms were responsible for over 20,000 of the 35,000 road excavations carried out in Northern Ireland last year. The Audit Office's report showed that improvement had been made by NI Water in recent years, but it emphasised that its rate remains the highest of all utilities. According to the Press Association, the report states: "There are also concerns about the late notification of road openings by [NI Water] and the high numbers of their works which are classified as emergency and urgent." A report from the Consumer Council for Water published in September revealed that a record number of complaints had been made by water customers about their providers during the 12 months to April 2008.
