Yorkshire Water 'should compensate sewer leak victims'

12 November 2008

Yorkshire Water should pay compensation to residents affected by a leak in its sewage system in Whitby, according Scarborough Council.

Leaders at the local authority claim the company's sewer infrastructure is inadequate and led to waste water being discharged into Whitby Harbour during the summer, Whitby Today reports.

Yorkshire Water insisted a breakdown at its Endeavour Wharf pumping station - which caused the leak - was a one off occurrence.

"The incident was unprecedented, rectified within three days and there have been no further issues since," said a Yorkshire Water spokesman.

But Scarborough Council is calling for the installation of emergency pumping equipment to ensure a similar leak does not occur in the future and it is also calling on the firm to compensate those who were affected.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire Water has announced that it is testing new platelet technology that allows leaks to be repaired from inside pipes, without having to dig up roads.
