A single person who lives alone in a property could save around £100 a year by having a water meter fitted instead paying an average rateable value.
That is the opinion of the Consumer Council for Water (CC Water), which has issued a number of tips for the UK public in light of a recent announcement from Ofwat that water bills are set to rise 4.1% in 2009.
CC Water also claimed that fixing taps and installing water-reserving devices in the home can help consumers save cash.
People with a soakaway system, which drains water into the ground rather than into a public sewer, may be able to save money by getting their local water firms to remove surface water charges.
Dame Yve Buckland, Chair of CC Water, said: "In the current economic climate any price increase will be a concern and customers may be looking for ways to make every penny count."
Considering the money-saving tips could result in "significant" savings, she added.
