Regulatory body Ofwat has announced it is to clamp down on suppliers which do not meet consumers' needs.
It published its Approach to Enforcement, which outlines the ways in which Ofwat will protect its consumers through its powers should they be let down by their water supplier.
"Any sanction we take will reflect the seriousness and impact of a company's failure. We do have the power to fine companies, but reserve this measure for the most serious misdemeanours," reveals Regina Finn, Ofwat Chief Executive Officer.
She adds that every company should fulfil its obligations, with any firm which fails to do so needing to act swiftly to ensure customers are not penalised.
Last month, Ofwat revealed that the cost of the average bill for customers receiving services from South East Water is to rise by 3% over the coming year.
