Rising water costs 'necessary'

14 April 2009

The water industry carries out numerous processes and functions that warrant an increase in charges in order to run effectively, it has been stated.

Barrie Clarke is Director of Communication at Water UK and responded to concerns that some consumers may find it a challenge to keep up with higher water prices, set to take effect this month.

Not only does the sector undertake tasks "that society is generally unaware of", it completes expensive cleaning services - the cost of which is shouldered by the consumer and not highway authorities.

"The water that runs off roads and contains polluting substances runs into sewers and is cleaned by the industry before being returned to the environment - this is a costly process," Mr Clarke explained.

Although many households find water bills relatively lower than other utility fees, companies may be able to help those who find it difficult to manage, he added.

Increases in price were also responded to by uSwitch.com. It said water meters could help consumers save up to £125 annually.
