A burst water main left thousands of homes in south London without water yesterday on what was one of the hottest days of the year so far. Engineers were called out to fix a leak on Merton High Street on Sunday morning, cutting off supplies to customers in the KT and SW postcode areas. Around 15,000 properties were affected by the leak, which also caused substantial flooding and led to the closure of a nearby Underground station. Temperatures in London on Sunday were forecast to reach 28 degrees Celsius, making the incident particularly inconvenient for those affected. A spokesman for Thames Water apologised to customers and said the company was working hard to restore a full supply. "It's really not a good day for this and we would like to apologise to customers," he told the Surrey Comet. Last week a burst water main in Eagley in Bolton left a large hole in a cobbled street, the Bolton News reports. Technicians from United Utilities were called to the scene to fix the leak and repair the road.
