Competition launched as part of tap water campaign

19 September 2008

A competition has been launched as part of the London on Tap campaign to encourage more Londoners to ditch bottled water in favour of tap water. Designers have been invited to create a water carafe for use in the many restaurants and bars that are supporting the campaign throughout the capital. Ten designs have already been shortlisted and have gone on display in City Hall. The winning creation will be announced by London Mayor Boris Johnson in December and will go into mass production next year. Rosie Boycott, Chair of London Food, said: "This competition should spearhead London as a sustainability leader by offering tap water first across our hospitality sector." She added that tap water is a "far better choice" than bottled water, both for the environment and for consumers' pockets. According to the London on Tap campaign, a fifth of people are "slightly nervous" or "too scared" to ask for tap water when eating out.
