Families in the north east and the south east are to face increases in their water bills after Northumbrian Water announced plans to introduce price rises. The water supplier, which owns Essex & Suffolk Water, said the increases will be "modest" and will allow for substantial investment. Between 2010 and 2015, the company hopes to invest £1.3 billion in its network - an increase of 22% on the amount invested between 2005 and 2010. In the north east it will concentrate on reducing sewer flooding, while in the south east it hopes to meet demand for drinking water by raising the level of the Abberton reservoir near Colchester. John Cuthbert, Managing Director of Northumbrian Water, said the proposals provide "important" benefits for customers. "We are able to announce plans for a significant increase in investment with modest price rises that, we believe, most customers will continue to find both affordable and excellent value for money," he remarked. The group has submitted its plans to industry regulator Ofwat for approval. Recently, Ofwat found that UK water suppliers are delivering improvements for customers by reducing leakage and tackling pollution and disruption.
