London 'has best tap water'

21 July 2008

Water meter customers in London may be happy to know that new tests have shown the quality of tap water in the capital to be better than anywhere else across England and Wales. According to the Drinking Water Inspectorate, 99.98% of samples taken from the taps of Thames Water customers last year met both British and European standards on water quality. London even beat the north of England, which received the lowest score in the tests with a 99.94% pass rate. David Owens, chief executive of Thames Water said: "Our drinking water is better than ever and we're rightly proud of it." He said the results have been made possible through funding from customers' bills, which has been used for additional investment. The results will provide a boost for tap water campaigns in the capital, which aim to encourage London restaurants to ditch bottled water and offer tap water to their customers instead. Water in the Thames region is provided by three water suppliers - Thames Water, Sutton and East Surrey Water and Three Valleys Water - to around 12 million customers.
