Anglian Water has claimed that a small rabbit was the cause of the presence of cryptosporidium in its supply recently. Officials stated that the animal managed to make its way into the treatment works at Pitsford via an ancillary tank. Chief Operating Officer Peter Simpson remarked that this was an "unusual" turn of events that is unlikely to happen again in the future. "We continually monitor the quality of our water. This monitoring enabled us to detect low levels of cryptosporidium at a very early stage, isolate the affected part of the process and take immediate steps to alert customers," he revealed. He added that steps have been taken so that an outbreak on this scale in not witnessed again. Consumers on the Northamptonshire area were recently affected by the crisis and had to be shipped bottled water. Over 108,000 were caught up in the episode and could not access tap water.
