UK households 'use over 1000 gallons of water a day'

21 August 2008

Households in the UK use an average of 1000 gallons of water a day, according to a new study by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It reveals that almost 33 gallons are used for drinking and washing and the rest is used "virtually" through production of food consumed and clothing worn. The research concludes that the UK is the sixth largest importer of water in the world, with only 38% coming from its own resources and the rest coming from countries such as Morocco and Spain. Stuart Orr, a spokesman for the WWF, is urging consumers to examine their water footprint and to consider how much water they are using, not just for washing and drinking but also as a result of their other consumption habits. Meanwhile, a spokesman for Waterwise has suggested that installing a water meter could help households save on their bills. Chris Philpot told thisiswiltshire.co.uk that a meter allows consumers to see how much water they are using and where they can cut down.
