Water meters 'could save a third of water bills'

20 August 2008

Households could save money on their water bills by installing a water meter, it has been claimed. Chris Philpot of Waterwise told thisiswiltshire.co.uk that meters help people understand how much water they use and on what. He also called it "the only fair way of paying for water", as it means paying only for what is used. According to the report, water meters reduce consumption by 10% and could save up to one third on bills. It also said that while 30% of people in the UK use water meters, the rest pay a fixed rate based on an assessment from 1970. Mr Philpot said taking short showers rather than baths and turning the tap off while brushing teeth could help reduce the 50 litres of water wasted a day by the average person Water companies said last week that they intend to raise bills above inflation by 2015. Thames Water, United Utilities and Severn Trent were among the companies that indicated they intend to raise their prices.
