Water-saving gadgets to be trialled in East Anglia

4 September 2008

Households in East Anglia are being asked to trial a number of gadgets designed to save water and reduce bills for those on meters. According to the Ipswich Evening Star, Anglian Water is seeking 800 families who are paying metered charges to take part in the trial. Volunteers will be able to apply for up to eight water-saving products which will be fitted by qualified plumbers where necessary. They will then be asked to record any savings made as a result of the gadgets, which include shower flow controllers, tap inserts and dual flush toilet cisterns. An Anglian Water spokeswoman told the Ipswich Evening Star that all the gadgets will be provided and installed free of charge. "All Anglian Water asks in return, apart from an appointment when the plumber can visit, is five minutes of customers' time to answer a short telephone questionnaire which will help us understand where we can help save the most water," she remarked. According to Waterwise, toilet flushing accounts for up to 30% of a household's total water use, while clothes washing accounts for 13%.
