Water suppliers are delivering improvements for customers by tackling leaks, pollution and disruption to water supplies, Ofwat has found. The industry regulator said that in response to its challenge for water suppliers to improve their services, companies have made major progress. All water suppliers in England and Wales have either met or exceeded their leakage reduction targets, while sewage-related pollution and flooding incidents have also been cut, the watchdog said. Regina Finn, Chief Executive of Ofwat, said: "This is a positive picture, showing that the water sector can and is meeting the needs of consumers and the environment." But she urged water suppliers not to become complacent, pointing to future challenges such as climate change and the demands of a growing population. Ofwat will expect suppliers to meet these challenges and to do so without compromising the quality or value of the service they provide, she said. Meanwhile, the Consumer Council for Water has warned that consumers could see their water bills rise by £200 a year under government proposals to install water meters in all UK homes.
