Welsh water 'safe to drink'

15 August 2008

Households in Gwynedd in Wales have been told they no longer need to boil their tap water after tests revealed it is safe to drink. Almost 5,000 Welsh Water customers were told to take the precaution for 48 to 72 hours when heavy rainfall affected the quality of their water. Traces of cryptosporidium parasites were discovered on Saturday and a local water treatment works was closed down for 24 hours. But the water board said the risk if gastro-intestinal illness as a result of drinking unboiled water has now passed. Welsh Water said the decision had been made in consultation with Gwynedd Council and the National Public Health Service for Wales. "We do appreciate that asking our customers to boil tap water used for drinking or food preparation is a great inconvenience and we would like to say thank you to them for putting up with this for the last three days," said the water provider. Consumers in Northamptonshire were affected by a cryptosporidium outbreak in July. They were also advised to boil tap water before drinking and preparing food.
