Wildlife to be 'saved' by water bill hikes

14 July 2008

Homeowners could find that their water bills increase in the near future under proposals to invest more money into saving wildlife that lives in rivers and wetlands, following a report from the Environment Agency. According to the Guardian, water suppliers have been urged to look for alternative sources by the agency. However, the impact on customers could mean bills cost £30 more a year, the Consumer Council for Water said. Policy manager for the council Deryck Hall suggested that there is a "threat" to the public supply of water. "We know there needs to be a balance between the environment and public supply ... but it needs to be done in a very sensitive and pragmatic way," he told the paper. In related news, Scottish Water may soon build a new water treatment facility after the plans for a pipeline were approved, the Edinburgh Evening News reported.
