BT has acquired a wireless network designed to serve the needs of yacht owners, it has been announced.

The telecommunications giant bought the Square Mile Marina network from Dominic Kilinger, who founded the firm in 2002.

Prior to the sale Mr Kilinger had appeared on TV show Dragons' Den seeking capital for his venture and managed to prize an investment of £150,000 from retail magnate Peter Jones.

BT now intends to switch the Wi-Fi service to its BT OpenZone offering in time for the start of the sailing season in March, the Guardian reports.

Once this change is enacted, the BT Openzone service will provide wireless broadband to 3,000 permanent berth holders and visiting boats.

Chris Bruce, general manager of BT Openzone said: "BT has a strong affiliation with the sailing community through our support of Dame Ellen McArthur and the BT Global Challenge.

“As an extension of this commitment, BT is very excited about the opportunity to offer Wi-Fi services to the sailing community and we will be looking to expand this network in 2008."
