Sky was responsible for connecting more than a third of all new broadband customers in the UK in the first quarter of 2008.

According to Strategy Analytics, its performance during this period allowed the company to hold its position as the country's fastest growing broadband provider.

Research from the group also suggests that Tiscali regained ground in the marketplace, although Orange continued to perform poorly by comparison.

"After a period of seesaw growth and decline in recent quarters, Tiscali appears to have regained some stability ... That being said, the company's future remains uncertain," said vice-president of Strategy Analytic's Digital Consumer Practice Ben Piper.

BT Retail remained the largest provider overall, with 4.4 million broadband customers and a market share of 26 per cent, the report notes.

However, Sky connected nearly one million customers in the year up to March 2008, compared with 741,000 users signed up by BT.

Sky recently won both the Best Deal for You and Joint Best Value for Money awards in the 2008 uSwitch broadband poll.
