H20 has announced the start of work on its high-speed fibre-optic broadband network.

Under plans, the next-generation broadband service will be available to residents and businesses in the BH10 and BH11 postcodes in Bournemouth, Dorset.

The Fibrecity project, which will see speeds up to the 100Mb mark, is being bank-rolled by £30 million of private investment.

"We are leading the way where other, far bigger organisations have failed to deliver," said H20 Networks chief executive Elfed Thomas.

He went on: "It is clear that private sector funding of these next generation networks is imperative to ensure that the UK is brought swiftly into the 21st century as more and more of our businesses and homes use media rich services."

Homeowners in the area which will be affected by the installation of the network have been assured that disruption will be minimal.
