Mobile broadband provider 3 has plans to significantly upgrade its UK network over coming years, eventually reaching speeds of up to 14.4Mb.

At a regulatory meeting, the company's chief executive Keith Russell lifted the lid on work which will increase the number of mast sites 3 operates in the UK from 7,500 to 13,000.

Commenting on the future development, Mr Russell told Trusted Reviews that the mobile broadband market is set to see continued growth.

He said: "The appetite for mobile broadband will continue to grow rapidly. Our data centric offerings and internet centric communications [Facebook, MSN, Email, Skype, etc] have doubled in the last 12 months.

Adding: "Internet behaviour is now moving from outside the home."

Meanwhile, at the meeting with fellow mobile broadband providers, Mr Russell accused 3's competitors of "scaring" customers over roaming charges.
