The results of a recent speed consistency test for UK home broadband has seen O2 has seen O2 come out on top.

Moneysupermarket's quarterly study found that the average speed of O2's 8Mb offering turned out to be an impressive 4.95Mb.

Other developments include Orange's arrival in the top three - its average speed of 3Mb has pushed TalkTalk out of a podium position.

The good news for Orange could be a consequence of recent improvements made to the provider's UK broadband network.

Analysing the results, Moneysupermarket's head of broadband, Rob Barnes, said: "Our tests have shown O2 is not just an overnight success - it's establishing itself as one of the best broadband providers on the market.

"With Orange also pushing its way into the top three, mobile networks are dominating the 8Mb market at the moment, although whether Orange can maintain consistency remains to be seen."

Other data form the speed tests underlined the value of 2Mb deals, which were found to offer an average speed of 2.08Mb.
