A UK provider is trialling broadband at speeds of up to 40Mb delivered by copper wire.

EasynetConnect is aiming the service at small-to-medium businesses (SMB) and intends to keep firms one step ahead with a brand new frequency plan.

The first companies that will be able to enjoy the benefit of the fast service will be organisations lying within one kilometre of the provider's 1,200 exchanges.

Chris Stening, Easynet Connect managing director explained that the technology will meet the demand of high-speed internet without the need for fibre.

He said: "By continuing to push the boundaries of what copper networks can deliver, we are able to bring the very best internet connectivity to as many businesses as possible.

"Achieving 40Mb proves that with the right technology and innovation, copper-based networks can deliver the quality of internet connection which UK businesses demand and deserve."

By using higher frequencies over the same Layer 2 Ethernet backbone as its 20Mb service, the provider is able to transmit data at a faster rate.
