Virgin Media has been testing broadband speedtests, because of growing concern that the technology used by some companies does not give accurate readings.
The concern centres on the ability of speedtesters to accurately calculate super-fast broadband, which operates at speeds of 20Mb and 50Mb.
Jon James, director of Group Strategy at Virgin Media, told Tech Radar: "There is a real risk that customers are being misled.
"Speed testing sites are not accurately measuring the new generation of high speed broadband services offering 20Mb and above."
Meanwhile, one expert has claimed that mobile broadband technology is improving at such as rate that it may soon be able to reach speeds to "satisfy online betters".
Brian Wright, director of business at the Remote Gambling Association, said that gambling over broadband connections will be "the growth area in years to come".
