Gateshead Council has revealed that a brownfield site may soon have access to the fastest cable broadband speeds in the country.
The former Freightliner depot near Gateshead Town has been earmarked for a housing development which would be connected up to a network operated by Gateshead Technology Innovations Ltd.
A fibre-optic broadband cable could be hooked up to the nearby Baltic Business Quarter network allowing residents to enjoy state-of-the-art connectivity.
"Baltic Business Quarter is developing the best communications infrastructure available anywhere in the UK today," said leader of Gateshead Council, councillor Mick Henry.
"The system was designed specifically to attract major employers and high quality jobs creative jobs to Gateshead. However, we believe it would be relatively simple to extend this system into neighbouring areas - and offer householders the potential to access some of the fastest and most powerful broadband in the world."
Work is expected to be completed at the Baltic Business Quarter site by this spring.
