Broadband provider TalkTalk is to split from the Carphone Warehouse group.

The announcement was made as Carphone Warehouse revealed quarterly subscriber figures for the first part of 2009.

Some 74,000 new broadband customers joined the group – which also includes AOL – during the first three months of the year, taking total subscriber numbers to 2.8 million.

Interestingly, TalkTalk attracted 97,000 new customers over the period, but a loss of 23,000 AOL users took the overall gains figure to 74,000.

Chief Executive Charles Dunstone highlighted that TalkTalk is expected to gain between 125,000 and 175,000 customers over the coming year.

He also said that these gains will come from the ISP's emphasis on low-cost broadband. "Our value proposition is clearly resonating with customers," he noted.

Exact details of when the separation will take place have yet to be revealed, with Carphone Warehouse explaining that this depends on the cost of splitting the company's credit.
