A new personal navigation and mapping application will be made available to O2's customers thanks to a deal the operator has signed with Telmap.

The service will be available to most users on the O2 network who have GPS-enabled handsets.

O2 and Telmap have "worked closely" to ensure that the new app is as useful as possible and that it includes a raft of features.

For example, it will produce traffic alerts, in-car 3D maps, walking directions, restaurant listings and event ticketing.

Moreover, the new app will also provide information about Wi-Fi hotspots and other points of interest, such as O2 Academy venues.

Peter Rampling, O2's Marketing Director, believes that the agreement between the operator and Telmap is "pioneering".

He said: "We have worked closely with Telmap to build a service wrap around the application which we believe will offer the best customer experience. Navigation is fast becoming one of the most popular mobile services and we look forward to bringing this leading application to our customers."
