The government has confirmed that Stephen Timms is to take charge of overseeing its Digital Britain plan.

Mr Timms, the Financial Secretary, will now also work on the delivery of universal broadband in his additional role as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

The work done on the Digital Britain report will be overseen by Business Secretary Peter Mandelson and Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw.

Speaking about his new position, Mr Timms said that access to faster broadband will be at "the top of [his] in-tray".

He commented: "It's vital for jobs and growth that Britain is able to maximise the benefits of the digital revolution.

"I look forward to driving this project forward in my joint role working in the Treasury and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills."

Mr Timms went on to say that another priority would be tackling digital piracy.
