What do I get with a cheap broadband deal?

A cheap broadband deal could save you a lot of money per year, as long as it's a service that still gives you what you need.

Many of the cheapest broadband deals available are strong fibre broadband deals with good speeds and reliability. And very often, the simple fact that you sign up to a different provider as a new customer will make your monthly price cheaper.

The cheapest broadband deals tend to leave out many of the premium add-ons - such as pay-TV or mobile phone services – but the quality of your service shouldn't budge.

Plus, while most won’t offer the fastest internet speeds available, they still usually provide plenty of bandwidth for the average household. So with a low-cost deal, you should still be able to stream, game and scroll to your heart's content if you're a casual internet user.

The best way to find cheap broadband on Uswitch is by putting your postcode and address into our checker and sorting the results above by cost (low to high).

Pros and cons of cheap broadband

There are many obvious benefits to choosing a cheap Wi-Fi package, especially while the cost of living remains so high. But, as with most products, you get what you pay for, and you need to choose a service that meets your needs.

Pros

  • Low monthly prices

  • You can still get superfast part-fibre speeds

  • Simple broadband packages with no unnecessary bells and whistles

Cons

  • Usually offered by smaller providers with fewer services

  • Not a good option if your household needs broadband speeds above 100Mbps

  • They don't usually include other services like TV

Can I get a low-income broadband deal?

If you receive Universal Credit or another type of financial support, you'll likely qualify for a social tariff - the cheapest type of broadband deal on the market.

Broadband social tariffs are on offer from multiple well-known providers. They give you the same service as a normal broadband connection but for a heavily discounted price. They often cost between £12-20 per month, depending on the provider and speed you choose.

You'll also get to avoid yearly mid-contract price increases if you're on one of these tariffs, so it's absolutely a worthwhile option if you're looking to reduce your bills.

Citizens Advice recently found that one million Brits cancelled their broadband contracts last year because of rising costs¹.

Many of these people would have been eligible for a social tariff, but broadband providers haven’t been clear enough about them. So only 5% of people eligible for social tariffs are actually signed up to one².

All this means it’s essential to check whether your provider could move you onto a cheaper social tariff. Depending on which one you opt for, it could help to cut your monthly broadband bill by £10-15.

How to compare cheap broadband deals

There are lots of things you should look out for in a broadband deal if you're looking to reduce your monthly bills.

Cheap deals aren't necessarily offered with the lowest monthly price available. They might be cheap because they have high-value gift vouchers, or they combine many services into a single, cheaper monthly plan. Here’s how to find a deal that suits you.

1. Look for extras, bill credits and exclusive deals

It's important to look beyond monthly prices. Many providers will often throw in extras, such as vouchers, gift cards and bill credit that can bring the overall cost of your package down a notch.

For example, a cheap broadband deal could cost £22 a month for a 12-month contract, but it could come with a £60 voucher or reward card to spend as well. This effectively works out to £17 a month, which is quite a saving.

Plus, if you spot a deal labelled ‘exclusive’, then it often means it’s the best-value offer for that package available at the moment.

This doesn’t always mean it’ll be cheap, but it does mean you won’t find a better version elsewhere until the promotion is finished.

2. Don’t choose a speed that’s too slow

Many of the cheapest deals tend to come with the slowest available speeds. So if your household needs a decent internet connection to handle everyone’s usage, you should make sure to search for deals that are fast enough first.

It's much more important to find a deal that matches your demand, especially if multiple people are streaming, gaming or working at the same time. In the long run, you would end up avoiding a lot of frustration.

Plus, most faster deals usually aren't too much more expensive. So you'll likely find it very much worth the extra few pounds per month.

If you think you need a slightly faster package, take a look at our full range of broadband deals to find a speed that's right for you.

3. Consider bundle offers

If you already pay separate providers for other services like TV or your mobile phone, you could look into bundling them all with the same provider for a single monthly fee.

This way, you may find that the total amount costs you less than all of your separate bills put together. So make sure to look out for providers that offer all of these services.

They won't be 'cheap' deals, since they include many different services. But you'll get to carry on using the services you know and love, while potentially paying less overall with one brand compared to your current total cost.

4. Check the contract terms

Remember to check contract lengths when you compare deals. A shorter contract is often more convenient (especially for renters), but they can sometimes come with higher prices.

And make sure you check a provider's price increase rate before you sign up too. Some have bigger mid-contract price rises than others, and others put your monthly rate up significantly once your initial contract term is over.

This is why it pays to thoroughly compare available deals to see what the total cost will be. But it also means you should keep track of your contract end date, so you can switch away from any end of contract price hikes.

What is the fastest cheap broadband deal?

The fastest cheap broadband deals can offer 100-200Mbps speeds for under £20 per month.

For example, providers like Hyperoptic, Gigaclear and Community Fibre offer ultrafast packages of 150Mbps from a monthly price of around £18. This is far cheaper for this speed compared to the likes of Sky, Virgin Media and BT, who charge £28-30 per month for similar packages.

The cheapest broadband deals with the fastest internet speeds are usually offered by smaller providers rather than the well-known big brands.

However, these smaller providers have much less coverage across the UK than the larger providers do. So they’re a fantastic option if they’re available to your home, but you have to ensure you can access them first.

Are there cheap 30-day broadband deals?

Likely not. 30-day (or no contract) broadband deals tend to be more expensive per month because of their better flexibility. You’ll find much lower monthly prices with contracts lasting 18 or 24 months compared to 30 days.

However, if you only need a broadband connection for a few months (for example, you’re moving out soon), then a 30-day broadband deal will work out a lot cheaper overall. They’ll help you avoid paying expensive exit fees you’d no doubt be charged if you cancel a longer contract halfway through.

Which are the cheapest internet providers?

Many of the major broadband providers in the UK offer relatively cheap Wi-Fi deals. In fact, in 2022, the UK was found to have the fifth most affordable broadband in the world. However, this may have changed since 2023's annual price rises, which were some of the highest globally this year.

Despite this, there will still be particular providers that offer more affordable broadband deals than others. And they don’t necessarily offer a poorer service or lower quality packages, either.

Providers that offer low-cost broadband plans include:

Plusnet

Plusnet often features some of the lowest-price internet deals on the market and is well-known for offering excellent customer service.

The provider is part of BT Group, which includes other telecoms brands, BT and EE. All three companies have annual price increases in their contract terms, which is worth considering before signing up. However, most cheap broadband providers also include some form of annual price hike, so this shouldn't necessarily be a reason to avoid Plusnet alone.

Plusnet's value was highlighted in our review of the provider:

"Plusnet’s monthly price is definitely worth the service I receive from it. Since I’m not looking for a jam-packed service with lots of additional features, Plusnet is very well priced for the needs I have."

- Ben Gallizzi, Uswitch senior content editor, from his Plusnet broadband review

TalkTalk

Another popular low-cost broadband provider is TalkTalk.

Just like Plusnet, TalkTalk keeps its monthly prices low and focuses on delivering good service, with technical and financial support where needed.

It also offers broadband, TV and home phone bundles for a single monthly fee. So, if you watch a lot of television and still use your landline, a 'triple-play' provider like TalkTalk will likely keep your bills down by providing all three services at once.

Vodafone

Mobile network Vodafone is fairly new to the broadband market, but it has entered it with full force thanks to its fairly low-cost broadband deals and attractive broadband speeds.

Vodafone often sells its superfast 67Mbps broadband deal for the same price as other providers' slowest deals — and sometimes even throws in gift cards worth tens of pounds for signing up.

NOW Broadband

Sky-owned TV and broadband provider NOW focuses on great value-for-money offers.

While its Wi-Fi services and TV bundles aren't as premium as Sky's, NOW makes up for it with some very low monthly prices. Plus, you can still access exclusive Sky content with its affordable TV add-ons.

Hyperoptic

Hyperoptic is a full fibre-only provider that mainly supplies broadband to flats and newly built houses. It's not a very widely available provider, but it makes up for that by offering ultrafast and gigabit broadband speeds for surprisingly low prices.

With Hyperoptic, you'll get access to 150Mbps, 500Mbps and even 1Gb fibre internet at prices that the major broadband providers don't even sink to for their slowest deals. It also doesn't include any mid-contract price increases for the entirety of your initial term.

So, if you can access Hyperoptic's network, you'll be able to get incredibly fast speeds for a very low monthly rate.

Gigaclear

Gigaclear is another full fibre provider that offers fast speeds for relatively low prices. It has less coverage across the UK than the bigger broadband providers, but if you can use its services, you'll have access to ultrafast speeds for under £20.

Community Fibre

Community Fibre is a full fibre provider based in London. And like its peers Hyperoptic and Gigaclear, it focuses on regional coverage, extremely fast speeds, and lower prices than most major broadband providers.

Will I have to pay setup fees on a cheap Wi-Fi deal?

This depends on the provider and sometimes whether they are running a promotion or not. Some cheap broadband providers rarely charge setup fees in general, whereas others will offer free setup as part of a limited-time offer.

Our Uswitch tables display the setup fee that every broadband deal comes with. So you’ll know immediately whether a deal you like comes with an upfront cost.

However, you might need to look out for an installation cost when signing up for a new provider. Most providers won’t need an engineer to install your connection because many providers use the same network.

If you need a new broadband line installed, though, you may be charged an additional fee for your broadband to be activated.
