Internet service provider Virgin Media is to promote its fibre-optic broadband services at a major event held at the Bluewater shopping centre from today (October 14th).

The company is participating in SpeedWeek50, which is a seven-day event celebrating the benefits of quick technology and will conclude with Formula One star Jenson Button racing on a specially-designed track.

In the build-up to the finale, Virgin Media is allowing visitors to road-test its 50Mb broadband services using Hewlett Packard's Touchsmart PCs.

Neil Berkett, Chief Executive Oofficer of Virgin Media, said: "We are extremely excited to be bringing the thrill of Formula One to Bluewater at this crucial time in the Grand Prix season.

"Through our SpeedWeek50 event we want to give everyone the chance to experience super-fast speeds – whether it's Jenson's hot laps or our 50Mb broadband."

Earlier this week, a study published by Virgin Media found that two-thirds of people in the UK prefer to be online at all times.
