Broadband provider BT has stated that the launch of widespread fibre-optic internet access across the UK will provide many benefits to businesses.

According to Nigel Stagg, the Managing Director of the company's business division, "faster and smarter ways of working" will emerge as more firms embrace quicker broadband speeds.

In a column for, he explained that firms will particularly be able to embrace technological developments such as audio and video conferencing.

He added: "Seamless remote access will help businesses increase productivity and staff retention by equipping staff to work just as effectively out of the office, whether that's from home or on the move.

"Faster speeds will also have specific advantages for sectors that rely heavily on sharing data."

Mr Stagg's comments have come after Mike Blackburn, the North-West Regional Director of BT told the Manchester Evening News that super-fast broadband is key to the future of the area.
