New technology designed to measure the performance and quality of fibre-optic broadband connections could be set for its UK debut, according to its manufacturer.

The new eMetric System has been created by Australian firm Enex TestLab, which has claimed to be in discussions with communications regulator Ofcom over using the service on these shores.

According to the company, the hardware has the ability to measure and report on network and broadband issues, as well as latency, quality of service and remote network monitoring.

Matt Tett, Director of Enex TestLab, said: "Until now, broadband users, particularly consumers, have been unable to access an accurate test facility that can independently test, analyse and report on their Internet performance. eMetric addresses this."

Last week, City of York Council confirmed it has agreed a deal to launch a fibre-optic broadband network for the benefit of schools, libraries and other public services across the local area.
