Mobile broadband news

The number of mobile broadband subscriptions around the world continued to increase last year, it has been reported.

According to a study conducted by ABI Research, more than 271 million global consumers were accessing the internet via 3G-based mobile broadband connections by the end of 2009.

This represented 43 per cent growth on the previous year, highlighting the increasing importance of dongles in the consumer market.

Jake Saunders, ABI's Vice-President of Forecasting, said there was still potential for further expansion in the market.

He commented: "3G and 3.5G subscriptions are ramping up as the 'need for speed' encourages end-users to upgrade."

Last week, Broadband Forum reported that there are, in total, more than 466 million broadband subscribers around the world.
