Subscribers to BT's Total Broadband packages can now enjoy unlimited access to 1.5 million Wi-Fi hotspots, it has been announced.

The broadband provider has confirmed that its consumers can now take up wireless internet services from BT FON and Openzone hotspots, meaning they will be able to take advantage of the full capabilities of devices like smartphones and the iPad.

In the past, BT Total Broadband users had limits on their Wi-Fi usage, but the company hopes the change will ensure it offers the most complete service in the UK.

John Petter, Consumer Managing Director for BT Retail, said wireless internet is "needed more than ever before".

He added: "Now that operators like O2 are rationing 3G, BT Total Broadband customers can find fast Wi-Fi connections all over the UK's towns and cities with unlimited internet access from 1.5 million hotspots."

BT recently announced it is planning to make fibre broadband available to 87 per cent of homes and businesses in London by spring next year.
