Internet service provider (ISP) Eclipse has nominated five telephone exchanges for a broadband upgrade.

The broadband provider was recently invited by BT to nominate areas which it believes could particularly benefit from access to super-fast web services.

Eclipse, in turn, asked its subscribers to vote for inclusion, mirroring BT's own current Race to Infinity, reports ISPreview.co.uk.

Some 7,000 broadband deal customers voted in the poll, with Exeter Castle, Penzance, Exmouth, Haxby and Sutton Cross earning nominations.

The exchanges are likely to be receive upgrades, readying them for super-fast broadband services, in late 2011 or early 2012.

BT is currently investing £2.5 billion around the UK upgrading its national internet infrastructure and is aiming to deliver next-generation services to 90 per cent of the UK by 2017.
