The 3G version of the Apple iPad is proving to be the most popular among shoppers in the run-up to Christmas, it has been reported.

Market research firm Context found that 80 per cent of Apple tablet purchases in November 2010 were for a 3G-enabled iPad – highlighting the popularity of mobile broadband services among consumers.

Wi-Fi-only versions of the device proved less popular, with sales of these tailing off during the course of 2010 as more 3G models were shipped.

Context reported that the 3G 64GB version of the Apple iPad proved the top seller last month, as European sales increased by 6.5 per cent.

Jeremy Davies, Founder of the firm, noted that Apple continued to fend off competition from the Samsung Galaxy tablet.

"Apple was the first to market with something that has a universal appeal," he noted.

Consumers wishing to buy an iPad through Orange or T-Mobile in time for a Christmas delivery need to subscribe with the broadband providers by the end of today.
