Businesses and households in Woodley, Berkshire, can now take advantage of faster broadband speeds, following the first stage of BT's local fibre-optic rollout.

Initially 8,000 properties will be hooked up to the 40Mb broadband network, which could potentially offer up to 60Mb download speeds in the future, reports GetReading.

BT is in the process of upgrading local telephone exchanges and street cabinets across the UK to support its fibre-based broadband services push.

Through a £2.5 billion investment, the broadband provider is hoping to equip two-thirds of UK households and businesses with super-fast broadband by 2015.

John Weaver, South-East Regional Director at BT, commented: "Households and businesses switching to super-fast broadband will soon be experiencing the internet as they have never experienced it before.

"The advent of BT fibre-based broadband in Woodley will support local jobs and the local economy and is a vital part of BT's broadband plans for the region."
