People using satellite broadband

Internet service provider Avanti Communications is expected to activate its first UK consumer broadband deal as early as next week.

The satellite broadband provider, which launched its HYLAS 1 satellite into orbit in November 2010, recently completed in-orbit testing and is now preparing to go live.

According to, the 10Mb-capable satellite is delivering better-than-expected performance in some areas.

David Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Avanti Communications, said the testing phase of HYLAS 1 was "a complete success" and had placed the firm in "a strong position for future growth".

"With Europe's first fully operational broadband satellite, Avanti will now provide a range of satellite data communications services to consumers, enterprise and governmental organisations across the UK and Europe," he stated.

"In such a vast market with so much growth in data demand, and a strong customer base already committed, we are highly confident of achieving rapid commercial success for this powerful and flexible satellite."
