There were almost 20 million individual broadband subscribers in the UK at the end of last year, latest figures from Ofcom have revealed.

According to the media regulator, the total number of residential, public and business properties with a fixed broadband line reached 19,468,000 in Q4 2010.

This represented a 728,000 increase on the 18,740,000 registered broadband subscribers recorded in Ofcom's 2009 Telecommunications Market Data Tables.

BT Retail increased its user base from 4,876,000 to 5,387,000 over the 12-month period, while rival DSL broadband providers saw their combined total fall from 3,638,000 to 2,547,000.

Cable broadband provider Virgin Media ended 2010 with 4,028,000 broadband users, up from the 3,845,000 it had registered in December 2009.

The firm will be hoping the recent launch of its 100Mb fibre broadband service will lead to a significantly increased market share during 2011.
