Networking manufacturer Billion UK claims to have developed the first broadband router which is compliant with IPv6.

The new Internet Protocol address standard is being introduced as the current range of IPv4 addresses is running out.

Edward Kung, Managing Director of Billion UK, said the new router is more than just a "24-hour test-flight of IPv6".

"Billion has the hardware available for customers and also leading internet service providers have the broadband network available - so it's live and ready-to-run now," he stated.

"We will all have to start using it in the near future, that is clear - other countries are already using IPv6 as standard so we need to be ready."

Earlier this week, leading broadband provider Plusnet urged other ISPs to start preparations for the transition to IPv6.
