BT Retail has expanded its fibre broadband services to include an ultra-fast connection, it has been announced.

The commercial launch of 100Mb broadband services means BT has now matched Virgin Media in terms of UK download speeds.

And BT claims its BT Infinity maximum upload speeds are up to 50 per cent higher than those provided by its main rival.

BT is using fibre-to-the-home connections to deliver 100Mb services, although they are only available from a limited number of telephone exchanges at present.

London, Chester, York, St Austell, Ilford and Exeter will be among the first to gain access to ultra-fast BT fibre broadband.

BT Openreach's Chief Executive Liv Garfield said the broadband provider has "pulled out all the stops" to make sure its products fit the needs of its customers.

"Pole and duct access will enable communication providers to deliver super-fast broadband speeds in areas outside the existing planned commercial footprint, so we felt it was important to launch the products as soon as possible," she stated.
