Sunderland says it will be the first city in the UK to offer blanket superfast broadband coverage.
Homes and businesses on Wearside will enjoy some of the fastest speeds in the country as wall-to-wall broadband coverage is rolled out over the coming months.
The service is being delivered by BT, which aims to bring superfast to 90 per cent of homes and businesses by summer 2012.
BT will provide superfast broadband via both fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) and fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology.
FTTC provides downloads speeds of up to 40Mbps and upload speeds of up to 15Mbps; FTTC gives download speeds of up to 100Mbps and upload speeds of up to 30Mbps.
These speeds are set to increase next year, with FTTC speeds doubling and FTTP delivering download speeds of up to 300Mbps.
Councillor Paul Watson, Leader of Sunderland City Council said: "Being able to announce that Sunderland will be the first city in Britain to offer wall-to-wall access to superfast broadband is the result of our vision, ambition and commitment.
"I'm proud of our city and what we have achieved."
The government wants all UK homes to have broadband access by 2015.
