Kabel Deutschland claims to have become the first broadband provider to achieve broadband download speeds of 4,700Mb.

The German cable operator reached the milestone during real-world field tests, according to ISPreview.co.uk.

At present, Kabel Deutschland's network in the city of Schwerin is capable of achieving 100Mb download speeds.

Lorenz Glatz, Chief Technology Officer of Kabel Deutschland, explained that up to 4.7Gb speeds can be achieved using an 862MHz upgraded cable network.

"Using this speed, a DVD could theoretically be downloaded within eight seconds," he stated.

"Current standard laptops or modems cannot even process these high speeds. It will take many more years until users find online services and web content that need a download speed of up to 4.7Gb."
