The UK’s biggest broadband providers won big at last night’s uSwitch Broadband Awards at London’s Covent Garden, with Virgin Media, Sky and BT leading the charge.
Virgin Media scooped four wins in 15 categories – including the night’s most coveted gong: Best Broadband Provider, based on a combination of customer votes and speed test data from uSwitch.com.
Known for its ads featuring speedsters Usain Bolt and Mo Farah, Virgin also won Fastest Home Broadband for its super-fast fibre-optic network, as well as Best Wi-Fi Service and Best Broadband Innovation for the UK’s first underground Wi-Fi network.
Sky also bagged four awards, including the much sought-after Best Customer Service, Best Technical Support and Most Recommended Broadband provider. It capped things off with Best Pay TV service, decided by a judging panel of industry experts.
BT came second with three wins, taking home the honour of Best Broadband & Home Phone, Best Broadband, TV & Home Phone and Best Customer Rated Fibre Broadband.
Keenly priced provider TalkTalk won the Best Value Home Broadband award, while Yorkshire-based Plusnet nabbed Best Customer Rated Home Broadband. Even mobile networks Orange and Three managed to share some of the limelight, winning Best Customer Benefits and Fastest Mobile Broadband respectively.
Ernest Doku, communications expert at uSwitch.com, said: “Despite BT’s impressive ratings in the two bundle and Fibre Broadband award categories, this year has really been a two-horse race between Virgin Media and Sky. Both are notable for offering internet and digital television services - two luxuries fast becoming essential in many UK households.
“But as broadband becomes a must-have, speed and cost remain top concerns for consumers. As providers battle it out for more of the market, deals offering super-fast speeds, without the high price tag, make it an exciting time for consumers. And hoping to tip the balance in their favour, providers are realising the importance of value-adds and delivering great customer support.”
