Doctor Who is the TV character Brits take the greatest pride in, a new poll from broadband provider Plusnet has indicated.
The Time Lord - who celebrated half a century on air this week - came top of a consumer survey to see which fictional characters have captured the nation's hearts.
The Doctor received 27 per cent of the vote, beating off competition from the loveable Jim Royle of 'The Royle Family' (20 per cent) and cheeky chappy 'Eastenders' character Alfie Moon (16 per cent).
Maggie Smith's tremendous Lady Violet - of 'Downton Abbey' fame - claimed fourth place with 16 per cent of the vote, while cancer-stricken Hayley Cropper from 'Coronation Street' was next with 14 per cent.
Over two-thirds of those surveyed by Plusnet said they were proud of the content produced for British television.
Dave Tomlinson, Senior Product Specialist at Plusnet, said the broadband provider always prepares for "a great rush of people" catching up or streaming shows like Doctor Who online.
"It is great to see such a legacy live on and get more and more popular as new generations come along," he stated.
