Virgin Media’s pay-TV service is the best value for money of any broadband provider, a uSwitch poll reveals, as the supplier trumped bigger spending rivals to be named cost-conscious consumers' favourite.

In a survey in which 566 site users were asked which pay-TV service offered the best value, Virgin Media was ranked top with 30.04% of the vote.

The ISP's win will have been founded at least in part on the well received Tivo box, as well as its offer of HD at no extra cost.

The fact that Virgin Media TV customers also don’t need to sign up for a landline and pay line rental will also have been a key factor, as will the will the service’s 200+ channels and the option to add Sky sports and movie channels and BT Sport.

Ashley Scott, a Virgin Media spokesperson said: “We're really pleased uSwitch readers have named Virgin Media as the best value TV provider in the country.

“Taking a bundle of services, such as broadband, phone and mobile from Virgin Media, is one of the best value ways to keep a household connected."

In at second place was BT, with free BT Sport along with live Premier League coverage and the YouView box helping the broadband supplier-turned-broadcaster poll 28.09% of the vote.

That meant it just pipped the company that invented the UK pay-TV market, Sky, which landed in third-place with 27.74%.

In at fourth was TalkTalk, whose TV product uses the same YouView box as BT and is pitched principally at consumers on a budget, with 14.13%.

The findings, which suggest Britons are happy to pay extra for premium content and must-see TV shows and sports, come as the UK pay TV market has become increasingly competitive over the last 12 months, spurred largely by BT and its nascent BT Sport channel.
