YouView sales reached expected levels during 2012-13, it has been claimed.

The set-top box provider - a partnership between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Arqiva, BT and TalkTalk - said initial uptake was in line with forecasts.

Over 500,000 UK households are now in possession of a YouView box, providing access to Freeview channels, on-demand content and TV catch-up services.

The majority of users have received their boxes through BT and TalkTalk, which offer the devices as part of TV bundles.

Only 30,000 are believed to have been bought through high street retail outlets to date.

The YouView partners invested £42.1 million in the service during 2012-13, up 30 per cent from the £32.6 million spent in the previous financial year.

This came as employee numbers increased from 29 to 55 over a 12-month period.

YouView expanded its research and development team from one to 15, and increased the number of administrators from 28 to 40.
